Our Program
The Family Medicine Residency Program at University of Michigan Health-West is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We have continued accreditation and have initial accreditation for Osteopathic Recognition (OR). Our program offers five first year positions.
The Family Medicine Residency at University of Michigan Health-West provides clinical experiences in its outpatient office at Community Health Center. This office features 31 exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms and an array of equipment for clinical procedures. Our office sees a large, underserved population. In addition to this, approximately 15% of our patient population is made up of new immigrants to the United States. These patients come from all over the world including the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Bosnia, Africa, Central and South America. Clinical cases are also diverse. We have a large pediatric population. In addition, our residents manage a wide range of primary care concerns including women’s health, hypertension, psychiatric disease, autoimmune disorders, etc.
We teach more than 30 outpatient procedures at Community Health Center including dermatological procedures, colposcopy, cryosurgery, fracture care, joint injections/drainage, and osteopathic manipulative treatment. As a resident, you will have the opportunity to learn how to manage health care for an entire family, even in the most complex cases.
Specialty rotations are offered with more than 60 specialists who provide training in areas such as cardiology, pulmonology, rheumatology, allergy and immunology, and sports medicine.
A requirement of graduation is that all residents participate in at least two senior projects. One of these projects must be a Quality improvement project. The second project may be another QI project or original research. You will have access the MSUCOM statewide Campus system research team as well as the UMHW IRB and research team. You must present at least one of your projects at the University of Michigan Health-West research day.
The program is affiliated with the Statewide Campus System of Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. Other affiliated hospitals include Devos Children’s Hospital, Corewell Health (formerly Spectrum Health), Trinity Health, and Kent County Public Health Department.
In addition to our Statewide Campus System affiliation through MSU, we are also offer our residents the opportunity to rotate at other hospitals in the Grand Rapids area. Research is strongly encouraged, and our residents have won awards for the work they have done in clinical research.
Our program strength is our residents, our staff, and our ability to prepare our residents for a future outpatient family medicine practice. We use EPIC as our EMR for both in-patient and out-patient visits. We currently offer a Sports Medicine Fellowship at UMHW (see program). We quickly responded to the pandemic by offering virtual visits and continued to care for our patients throughout the year. Although the pandemic had a significant impact on our patient numbers, all our residents graduating in 2020 met the 1,650 requirements (when counting virtual visits). Our numbers have rebounded, and our most recent graduates met their patient numbers.

Dear Residency Candidate,
Welcome to the University of Michigan Health-West Family Medicine Training Program. We are pleased to introduce you to our program and welcome your interest in our residency program. Finding the right program for your training is an important step in your career in medicine and is critical for your future success.
Our mission statement is to produce high quality, well-trained Family Medicine physicians while caring for the underserved population in the greater Grand Rapids area. Our hospital has a unique heritage as an Osteopathic community hospital founded by physicians in 1942. As we continue to grow, we benefit from the foundation of those values in our residency. There are also many benefits both professionally and personally with the diversity of experiences in West Michigan. Outdoor and indoor activities are plentiful and encouraged during down time throughout your training program.

Application and Interview Process
University of Michigan Health-West accepts all our applications through Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Our NRMP identification code is 2170120C0.
We typically receive between 100-150 Osteopathic and 250-300 Allopathic applications. All our positions are Osteopathically recognized thus MD candidates must meet our pre-requisite requirements. We interview 30-40 candidates. Ideal candidates will be professional, dependable, and work well with our current residents and faculty.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., or have a work authorization card or a J1 Visa. University of Michigan Health-West does not generally sponsor Visas for medical residents, subject to the limited instance where the Hospital determines that U.S. citizens or permanent residents of equal training, experience and competence are otherwise unavailable for the residency program at issue.
The following will be included in the pre-screening criteria:
- We will only consider students who have graduated within one year of the match (example: student graduates in May 2018 but did not match in 2018. We would only consider again for the 2019 match).
- Students who will not be graduating in the same year as the match will be looked at on a case-by-case basis to consider for interview.
- Passage of Steps 1 and 2 USMLE OR Passage of COMLEX Level 1 and 2 (no minimum score).
- Those who require multiple attempts to pass will be looked at on a case-by-case basis.
- Minimum Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) Requirements (must meet one of the following criteria to be eligible for appointment):
- Graduate of a COCA-accredited College of Osteopathic medicine (COM) who holds a DO degree and demonstrates successful completion of OMT and OPP specific coursework.
- Graduate of a medical school in the US or Canada accredited by the LCME who holds an MD degree or graduate of a medical school outside the US or Canada who meets all other eligibility requirements per UMH-West hospital policy and has a certificate of completion for training* in:
- a. Osteopathic philosophy, history, terminology, and code of ethics
- b. Anatomy and physiology related to Osteopathic Medicine
- c. Indications, contraindications, and safety issues associated with the use of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment
- d. Palpatory diagnosis, Osteopathic structural examination, and Osteopathic manipulative treatment (must have a hands-on component of training).
Once we review all applications, interviews will be offered via email. All interviews will be conducted in person. The day will consist of interviews with faculty and residents, a hospital tour, a clinic tour and resident-oriented activities. Please reach out to our residency program coordinator for more details.
Our match list will be finalized and sent to our DIO for submission by the end of January.

Educational Highlights
The Family Medicine residency program learning experiences include:
- Monthly Journal Club
- Quarterly OMM Journal Clubs offered through the State-wide Campus System.
- Every other week Family Medicine didactics-attended by the FM residents, students, and core FM faculty.
- Monthly Educational programs through the Statewide Campus System sponsored by Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM)
- Monthly Clinical Education- This is a four-hour didactic program in which we have specialty physicians providing an educational experience for our residents.
- Monthly Tumor Board
- Monthly Grand Rounds
- Weekly Core Competency Lecture series- this is a one-hour presentation that incorporates the AGGME required core competency training for our residents.
- Every other week NMM didactics attended residents who have interest and availability to attend.

Family Medicine Resident Life
Resident Wellness
Our organization provides several support efforts to ensure our residents wellness is a priority. In addition to lectures on wellness and burnout, our residents are provided with many opportunities. We provide 24/7 access to our Employee Assistance Program. This provides life coaching, counseling, work/life resources, medical advocacy, and legal/financial resources for you and your family at no cost. The Office of Professional Well-Being at UMHW play an active and engaged role in measuring physician and APP wellness, while developing strategies to increase well-being for physician and APPs. The Graduate Medical Education office supports a resident wellness committee that meets once a month to talk about how to improve wellness, activities, etc. Outside of work, many residents from all specialties do plan activities such as indoor soccer league, bon fires, beach days, hockey leagues, fishing, and fitness.
Community Involvement
Several of our residents are active in many outreach activities that they are passionate about. They participate in a yearly “mini medical school” which encourages elementary children from low-income families to consider medicine as a career. Our residents have volunteered at the Mayor’s Clean Up Day, Kids Food Basket, Adopt-a-family for Christmas and provided medical care to a local homeless shelter.
Living in West Michigan
Living in West Michigan is awesome! Concerts, sports, trails, beaches, museums, there is always something to do! It is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts with multiple parks and trails. Lake Michigan is a 30-minute drive and there are numerous winter activities. These activities include nearby skiing and a luge track (one of three in the US designed to introduce beginners to the sport). Grand Rapids is also known as “Beer City USA” with its active nightlife and wide array of breweries.
