Nuclear Medicine

At UM Health-West Hospital, our nuclear medicine department is staffed with registered technologists and uses advanced equipment. The department has two imaging areas for outpatients and hospital patients.

Nuclear medicine tracks small amounts of radioactive isotopes in the body to perform procedures and aid physicians in making an accurate diagnosis. An example of this type of testing is the PET scan, where small amounts of radioactive material is injected, swallowed or inhaled and then tracked by positron emission tomography. PET scans are used to evaluate a number of conditions, including neurological problems, heart disease and cancer.
