Maternal Postpartum Care

The UM Health-West Childbirth Center offers an in-home care program after the mother and baby have been discharged to assist in the first several weeks after childbirth.

This is an important adjustment period: You are getting to know your baby, and your own body is recovering and adjusting to no longer being pregnant.

Our expert staff screens every new mother before discharge to make sure she is ready to take her new baby home. All mothers who meet certain guidelines are connected with a representative from “Welcome Home Baby,” a free, government-sponsored program that offers resources for home visits, playgroups, child development and screening programs for new mothers.

Prior to discharge, our staff also screens new mothers for postpartum depression and sets up the mother and new baby with their first after-delivery appointment with their family practice or pediatric physician.
