Welcome Letter from the Family Medicine Faculty

Dear Residency Candidate,

Welcome to the University of Michigan Health-West Family Medicine Training Program.
We are pleased to introduce you to our program and welcome your interest in our residency
program. Finding the right program for your training is an important step in your career in
medicine and is critical for your future success.

Our mission statement is to produce high quality, well-trained Family Medicine physicians
while caring for the underserved population in the greater Grand Rapids area. The Family
Medicine Residency program is made up of a team of hard-working, dedicated, goal-driven
individuals who wish to provide primary care to patients in their communities. The program
provides a comprehensive three-year curriculum to enable residents to learn the skills they
need for a successful practice. The program seeks to train individuals who have expertise in
population health and who participate in serving the medically underserved population. The
aim of the program is to produce excellent, independent practitioners who will be leaders in
their hospitals and communities.

Our hospital has a unique heritage as an Osteopathic community hospital founded by
physicians in 1942. As we continue to grow, we benefit from the foundation of those values
in our residency. There are also many benefits both professionally and personally with the
diversity of experiences in West Michigan. Outdoor and indoor activities are plentiful and
encouraged during down time throughout your training program.

We thank you for your interest in our Family Medicine Program at University of Michigan
Health – West and look forward to meeting you in the future!
