Surgical Services

Surgical Services is comprised of four departments: Operating Room (OR), Central Processing, Surgery Prep and Recovery (SPR) and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). These units work as an integrated team to support and provide safe and effective care to our patients at UM Health-West.

Central Processing

The Central Processing department provides support to Surgical Services as well as to various units in the hospital by processing instruments to ensure sterile instruments are avialable for procedures.

Operating Room (OR)

The main operating room is comprised of ten operating rooms, servicing the following specialties: General, Neurosurgery including robotic spine surgery (Mazor Renaissance, MAzor X, XVISION and O-arm), Orthopedic, Urology, Gynecology including robotic surgery (Davinci), Bariatric, Gastroenterology, ENT, Trauma, Hand and Podiatry. The OR is immediately adjacent to the pre-op (SPR), post-op (PACU) and central processing departments.

As an operating room RN, you touch the lives of more than 4,700 patients annually. The average orientation lasts 6 months, preparing you to care for patients in the operative arena.

Surgery Prep & Recovery (SPR)

The Surgery Prep and Recovery (SPR) Department provides comprehensive peri-anesthesia care to patients of any age group having a procedure at UM Health-West. The process begins with nurses collecting medical information and performing an extensive assessment through record review and patient phone calls. Upon arrival, staff specializing in peri-operative care help patients navigate through registration and procedure preparation to ensure patient understanding, safety and satisfaction.

Post procedure patients are cared for by dedicated nurses trained in recovery and discharge teaching. Safe and effective care is assured through evidence based discharge criteria. For some patients, an overnight stay may be necessary; therefore we offer a five bed overnight unit to meet these needs.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)

PACU services as an intermediate stop to assure patients awake safely fro anesthesia. These highly trained nurses manage airways, pain and post anesthesia complications.
