Metro Health – University of Michigan Health adds key leadership positions

Metro Health – University of Michigan Health, the first health system in West Michigan to appoint a physician CEO, is adding to its accomplished senior leadership with two executive vice presidents joining the team.

Dr. Rakesh (Raki) Pai has been hired to serve as the President of the Medical Group and Chief Population Health Officer, and Greg Meyer takes on the role of Chief Community Officer. They join an executive team built on expertise and strategic innovation.

Dr. Pai brings a wealth of experience around payor contracting, value-based care and medical group governance.

An accomplished cardiologist with certifications in cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular diseases, Dr. Pai has extensive experience both on the health plan and healthcare system delivery sides. He previously was Associate Chief Medical Officer at Cambia Health, an innovative healthcare solutions company with $10 billion in revenue.  At Cambia he ran Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield of Oregon, where he was responsible for medical cost stewardship, driving health care affordability initiatives and engaging key employers and providers to enhance the quality of care for members.

Meyer is a Grand Rapids native and accomplished development executive who will oversee the Metro Health – University of Michigan Health Foundation, along with Diversity and Community Relations.

He has played senior roles at Aquinas College, the University of Michigan and, most recently, the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids. Before embarking on a career in development, Meyer won the Boston Marathon in 1983 (in addition to the Chicago and Detroit Marathons) and set world records in distance running. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan.

Both executives joined the hospital’s team October 15, following the October 1 appointment of Dr. Peter Hahn as the region’s first physician CEO. Hahn said the selections are important to executing Metro Health’s strategic vision.

“I firmly believe structure determines performance and that leaders are only as effective as the teams they assemble,” Dr. Hahn said. “This is why I am working to complement our outstanding senior leadership with the best additions I can find.”
