UM Health-West’s Core Values and DEI Efforts Are Noted in Recognition as ‘Best of the Best’ Employer

University of Michigan Health-West, consistently named among the nation’s top employers, has earned additional recognition as the “Best of the Best” of large employers in West Michigan.

The health system received the award in the Elite category at the July ceremony honoring the “Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in West Michigan.”

In presenting the top award, the National Association for Business Resources praised UM Health-West’s commitment to its core values as well as its efforts in diversity, equity and inclusion. Examples included organization-wide education on sexual orientation and gender identity, and 33 DEI observances annually that contribute to an environment of belonging.

The award also highlighted UM Health-West’s contributions to work-life balance, such as enhanced flexible paid time off, and a “Care Day Policy” to accommodate unscheduled absences.

“We know our team gives everything they have to care for our patients – so do everything we can to support them,” said Bruce Carrier, Chief Human Resources Officer. “Our values of caring, innovation, inclusion, integrity, and teamwork describe a culture we have nurtured for 80 years. But what truly brings that culture to life is the work of our team. That deserves respect and support.”

NABR officials said the Best and Brightest program celebrates companies that are improving business, creating richer lives and building stronger communities.

This was the third year in a row and the sixth time since 2014 UM Health-West has been named to the national list of Best and Brightest. UM Health-West was the only Grand Rapids-area health system named to the national list, as well as the 2022 list of Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in West Michigan, a regional honor it has received 11 times since 2011.

A warm and welcoming culture, combined with competitive pay and benefits, helps UM Health-West stand out as an employer of choice, said Bruce W. Carrier, chief human resources officer.

“We have remained true to these time-honored standards as we continue to grow across West Michigan,” Carrier said. “I invite job seekers to see how this sets us apart.”
