The Assisted Breathing Center is one of the leading respiratory centers serving patients who are ventilator dependent due to disease, injury or other condition. Located within UM Health-West Hospital, the Assisted Breathing Center care team coordinates services with a full range of specialists to ensure the highest quality of care for ventilator-dependent patients. Acute medical services and rehabilitation are available at all times in a warm, friendly environment. When appropriate, our experienced team has the knowledge and skill to help patients successfully wean off the ventilator and a prove track record when it comes to weaning more difficult cases.

Admission Criteria
To be considered for admission to the UM Health-West Assisted Breathing Center, patients must meet the following criteria:
- Existing tracheostomy and ventilator dependent for at least 6 hours a day
- Requiring frequent acute care intervention related to respiratory needs
- Co-morbidities exist that require frequent medical monitoring including, but not limited to:Intermediate or continuous dialysis
- Wound care
- Frequent infections
- Diabetes mellitus
- Cardiac problems
- Patient is afebrile with stable arterial blood gasses and is hemodynamically stable
- Patient has a discharge goal, which might include:Discharge home on a ventilator
- Weaning off the ventilator
- Stabilization of co-morbidities
