Collection Requirements
Do not use lubricant during procedure. Label PreservCyt (ThinPrep) vial with patient's name and second identifier prior to collection. Place patient in lateral knee-chest or dorsal lithotomy position. CYTO PAP BRUSH technique: Uncap PreservCyt vial. Gently insert cytobrush into anal canal approx. 3 cm. Slowly retract brush while rotating 1 full turn in 1 direction and gently pulling back/forth to brush mucosal lining. Submerge brush tip in vial and rotate 10 times, pressing brush against wall of vial to dislodge cells. Vigorously swirl brush additional 10 times to detach cellular material. Discard brush and tighten vial cap until torque line on cap passes torque like on vial. POLYESTER SWAB technique: Uncap PreservCyt vial. Moisten swab with water (no lubricant). Insert swab into anal canal approx. 5-6 cm. Slowly retract swab while rotating 1 direction and firmly applying pressure to canal walls. Submerge swab in vial and vigorously agitate/swirl 10 times while pressing swab against wall of vial to dislodge cells. Discard swab and tighten vial cap until torque line on cap passes torque like on vial.
Shipping and Handling Instructions
Place vial in specimen bag and seal the top. If paper requisition is used, place the requisition in the outer pocket of the specimen bag. Specimen may be transported to laboratory at room temperature.
