Bed & Linens for Overnight Visitors
All patient rooms are furnished with a couch that transforms into a bed for a visitor staying overnight. Linens are provided and we ask that visitors “make-up” their bed during the daytime hours to give more room for caregivers to take care of the patient. If a visitor does plan to stay overnight, please discuss it with the charge nurse.
Each patient room has a private shower for patient use only.
Mail, Flowers & Newspapers
Volunteers deliver mail Monday through Friday. The Grand Rapids Press and USA Today are sold in the Café, located on the first floor of the hospital, and in Tommy Brann’s Coffee Bar, located in the hospital lobby, during the week.
Maintenance
A member of our Facility Services maintenance staff is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. If you are experiencing problems with anything not working properly in your room, please call extension 7800 and it will be taken care of as soon as possible.
Room Service
Room Service is a flexible, convenient way for you to receive your meals while you are a patient at UM Health-West. You can call and order exactly what you want to eat, whenever you are ready to eat – just as you would if you ordered room service at a hotel.
Once your physician orders your diet, you may select your meal from the Room Service menu. Based on the diet prescribed for you, some menu items may not be available. Please ask your caregiver if you have any questions about dietary restrictions.
Room Service is available from 7:00 am to 6:30 pm every day.
You must place an order to receive a meal – to do this, use your room phone to dial extension 3663. Your meal will be prepared to order and delivered to your room in 45 minutes or less. All items on the menu are available during all meal times.
The staff from Nutrition Services, a family member or someone from the nursing staff can help you place an order, if needed. Your nurse may give you additional instructions about timing your meals around your medications, tests and treatments.
Special Needs
For the hearing impaired or for patients who want to communicate with a hearing impaired relative or friend, a telecommunications device (TDD) can be obtained from the IT Service Desk by calling extension 7378. In addition, closed-captioning is available on in-room televisions.

Local Calls
To make a local call from your hospital room, dial 9, then the local number. There is no charge for local calls.
Operator-assisted Calls
To call collect or use a credit card, dial 9, then 0, and enter the area code and number you are dialing. We recommend that you inquire about the current rates from the long distance operator for operator-assisted calls.
Personal Calling Cards
To use your personal calling card, dial 9, then your long distance carrier’s toll-free number. You should be able to find instructions on your calling card. Prepaid phone cards are available for purchase in the hospital gift shop.
UM Health-West Hospital Departments & Services
To contact UM Health-West Hospital departments and services, dial the four-digit extension or extension 7200 for the hospital operator.
Calls to Your Room
Your friends and family can reach you by dialing the number listed on your phone, or by calling the Information Desk at (616) 252-7000 and asking for you by name.
Long Distance Calls
There is no charge for placing a national long distance call. Dial 9, then 1, and enter the area code and phone number you are trying to reach. A calling card or collect call will be required for international calls.
Television
High-definition, 37” flat-screen televisions are provided free of charge in each room. Televisions offer regular programming, movies on demand and education. Please be considerate of other patients by playing softly and by turning off your set at bedtime. If you have any trouble with your TV, please contact your nurse.
The C.A.R.E. ChannelTM
Continuous Ambient Relaxation Environment
Located on channel #1 on your television, the C.A.R.E. Channel provides ambient television programming for you and your family as a restful alternative to commercial television. The C.A.R.E. Channel has been developed to create an environment that supports recovery and improves comfort and rest. Available on a 24-hour basis, the C.A.R.E. Channel provides beautiful instrumental music that has been composed and produced specifically to support healing environments. The programming is designed to be in pace with the day/night cycle, with late-night programming providing soothing music and a soft, subdued midnight starfield.
Your Bed
Hospital beds are electrically operated. Your caregiver will show you how to adjust your bed properly.
Your Room
All UM Health-West Hospital rooms are private.
All rooms have call buttons at the bedside so you can easily notify your nurse. When you press the button, the nursing station is alerted that you need assistance. A staff member will respond as soon as possible.
If your room temperature is not comfortable, notify the staff.
