OB/GYN Residency

Welcome Applicants!

Thank you for your interest in our program. We welcome you and greatly encourage medical students interested in the UM Health-West OB/GYN Residency Program to participate in a fourth year rotation.

Welcome Letter

Dear Residency Candidate:

Welcome to University of Michigan Health-West OBGYN Residency Program in Wyoming, MI, a suburb of Grand Rapids, MI. Our mission is to educate our resident physicians and prepare them for the broad scope of obstetrics and gynecology while also providing excellent and evidence-based care for our diverse patient population in the community setting.

Our curriculum will provide you with ample exposure to all aspects of care in the operating room, labor and delivery, and ambulatory settings in both obstetrics and gynecology.

Over the four years at UMHW, our residents experience rotations in gynecologic oncology, maternal fetal medicine and ultrasound, reproductive endocrinology and infertility and many other rotations selected to provide the very best clinical preparation for their future careers. Elective rotations can be tailored to fit the interests of individual residents and their desired experiences.

Our program excels in several areas. First and foremost, our robust surgical and clinical training prepares our graduates for independent practice. Our training environment is collaborative and supportive with a strong focus on teamwork and maintaining a positive culture amongst residents and faculty. Our resident physicians also play an active role in lectures and simulations and teaching medical students, contributing to the overall success of our program.

As you embark on this residency path, we want to emphasize the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. We understand the demands of our field and the dedication required to excel, but we also recognize that your well-being is crucial to providing the best care for our patients. We are committed to create an environment that supports both your professional development and personal health. Grand Rapids is a vibrant city that offers a high quality of life, with a rich cultural scene, excellent schools, and abundant recreational opportunities. Whether you enjoy the arts, outdoor activities, or exploring new culinary experiences, you will find plenty to enjoy in our community.

Successful graduates have transitioned to practices throughout the United States in a variety of professional situations including private practice, hospital employed practice, and academic medicine and fellowship. We welcome your interest in our training program and look forward to meeting you and working with you as you consider your future in medicine.

Sincerely,

Renee Elderkin, M.D.
