Pulmonary Rehabilitation
UM Health-West Pulmonary Rehabilitation is here to help you catch your breath: This program combines exercise, education and support to restore breathing to the highest level possible.
A team approach
After a physician orders Pulmonary Rehabilitation, our registered respiratory therapists, led by a clinical medical director, will develop a treatment plan tailored to each patient’s needs and goals.
Class sizes are small and meet 2 or 3 times per week for up to 90 minutes. The pulmonary rehab staff works closely with patients to help them make steady, safe progress.
Rehabilitation and education include cardiovascular exercises, strength training, oxygen monitoring, energy conservation techniques, breathing strategies, proper use of inhalers, how to exercise with chronic lung disease, understanding medication, preventing infections and more.
The main goal is to improve quality of life, by increasing tolerance for exercise and managing shortness of breath. Equipped with better disease knowledge, participants learn how to decrease hospitalizations, reduce symptoms and recognize and prevent infections.
