Many prescription and nonprescription medicines can cause heartburn. A few examples are:

  • Aspirin, ibuprofen (such as Advil or Motrin), and naproxen (such as Aleve).
  • Antibiotics.
  • Steroids, such as prednisone.
  • Some heart medicines.

Caffeine and alcohol also can cause heartburn.
