Hi!
Welcome to our Internal Medicine page! We are so excited to have you here to learn about our program! Let me tell you a little bit about our residency…
We are an ACGME accredited Internal Medicine residency program with deep roots into our osteopathic heritage. What was once a small residency that started at the Grand Rapids Osteopathic Hospital has now blossomed into an 18 resident program that is proud to call ourselves part of University of Michigan Health-West! We have six residents per year, each with a diverse background and skill set that makes our program special. Though we are a small community hospital, we have a wide range of specialties available to us through our own facility and surrounding hospitals including Endocrinology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, and many others. We have a beautiful residency clinic where we have the privilege to take care of many members of the community. Our clinic is full of amazing resources with a multi-disciplinary team including social work and case managers, and we also have x-ray, lab, on-site pharmacists, dental office, and even a food pantry! We are so lucky to have such an incredible facility to provide excellent care to our patients!
Our hospital is a stunning 206 bed community hospital with state-of-the-art technology situated on the south end of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Inside the hospital you will find a great group of hospitalists who work closely with the residents, in addition to multiple specialists from all areas of medicine that you will have the opportunity to learn from as well. We are fortunate to have such a great team to be part of and to learn from! If you are interested in the academic side of medicine, we have a great research department to help foster those clinical questions and develop your own research studies! Whether you have goals to work as a hospitalist, in an outpatient IM office, or pursue a fellowship, we are able to help you reach your goals! Our past residents have matched into fellowships in ID, Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Critical Care, just to name a few! The world is your oyster, and we’d be happy to be part of it!

Mission Statement
The mission of our program is to improve the health and quality of life for the people of West Michigan through the education of well-rounded internal medicine physicians. Competency, compassion, and empathy to our patients and their families are core principles to our mission. Using these principles, we strive to raise, discuss, and elucidate the important ethical, scientific, and economic issues involved in medical practice and patient care. Our graduates complete our program with the tools to effectively communicate with patients, diagnose and treat diseases rare and commonplace, and navigate complex health systems.
Program AIMS
The Internal Medicine Residency Program at University of Michigan Health-West is comprised up of compassionate, hard-working, dedicated, self-directed, confident individuals who wish to provide primary care and inpatient medical services to patients in their communities. The program provides a comprehensive 3-year curriculum to enable residents to master the knowledge, skills, and abilities they will need for successful practice of medicine or to continue into a sub-specialty fellowship program of their choice. The program seeks to train highly motivated individuals who have expertise in management of medically complex patients for both inpatient and outpatient realms, keeping a keen focus on transitions of care for their patient through the system in which they practice. It is the aim of the program to produce excellent, well-rounded, independent practitioners who will be professional leaders in their hospitals and their communities.

Residents are also scheduled for 1-2 days each month at the Community Health Clinic to provide residents with a clinical experience in a primary care setting. We teach more than 30 outpatient procedures at the Community Health Clinic including dermatological procedures, cryosurgery, simple fracture care, spirometry, ECG interpretation and x-ray interpretation.

Application Process
We are excited and honored that you are interested in pursuing your residency at University of Michigan Health-West. Application Requirements:
University of Michigan Health-West accepts residency applications exclusively via Electronic Residency Application Service or ERAS. We participate in the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Our NRMP identification code is 2170140C0.
We recommend your application is complete and submitted no later than October 15 to be considered for an interview.
We typically receive between 750-900 applications every year and will select 65-75 for interviews. Ideal candidates will be professional, dependable and work well with our current residents and faculty. Interviews are offered on a rolling basis until all interview spots are filled.
Applicants must be U.S. Citizens, permanent residents of the U.S., or have a work authorization card or J1 Visa. University of Michigan Health-West does not generally sponsor Visas for medical residents, subject to the limited instance where the Hospital determines that U.S. citizens or permanent residents of equal training, experience and competence are otherwise unavailable for the residency program at issue.
All our positions are Osteopathically recognized thus all candidates must meet the minimum Osteopathic Principles and Practice (OPP) requirement as 1) be a graduate of a College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM) or 2) complete certificate of OPP/OMT training prior to or within 6 months of the beginning of PGY1.
In addition to meeting the OPP requirement, the following will be included in the pre-screening criteria:
- Applicants have graduated within one year of the match. (For example, applicants who graduated in 2019, but did not match in 2019 would only be considered again in the 2020 match).
- COMLEX or USMLE (we do not require both) “pass” score on first attempt.
